Hercule Florence: the new Robinson.

  • Nouveau Musée national de Monaco

 NMNM Florence 001 ceu 4698

Hercule Florence, Céu às 4 horas da tarde, n.d. Watercolor on paper 23,5 x 37,7 cm. Collection C. H. Florence / Leila et Silvia Florence São Paulo, Brésil.

Having invented “zoophonia”, a system of musical notation for birdsong, and “polygraphia”, a method of printing using the same principles as photography, Hercule Florence (1804-1879) can rightly be called a pioneer. This Villa Paloma exhibition is the first in Europe to display his drawings and writings plus the first photographic recording of the Americas. The intention is to give this multi-discipline artist his rightful place in cultural history, that of photography especially, by showing how his research paralleled that of his peers. The NMNM accompanies the Hercule Florence exhibits with works by artists (Lucia Koch, Jochen Lempert, Leticia Ramos) chosen for their ability to relate their practices to other disciplines.
