A leading political artist of the second half of the 20th century, Gustav Metzger’s work rooted in major contemporary issues has pushed back the boundaries of art. From 1959, like many artists of his generation, notably the Nouveaux Réalistes, he began creating artworks out of everyday objects or industrial materials destined to deteriorate. The exhibition flags up one of this German artist’s most innovative aspects: his very early involvement in environmental issues. An opportunity to revisit the MAMAC’s collections from a new angle, around the theme of auto-destruction.
