In March Mougins inaugurated a 3000m² arts complex delivering an eclectic programme.
This functional modern tool is sure to afford Mougins the opportunity to fulfil its ambition of becoming an essential local player on the culture scene. Mayor Richard Galy, a regional councillor and first vice-president of the Cannes Pays de Lérins inter-council partnership, explains: “Despite a population of 20,000, the town had no arts centre worthy of the name. The construction of this complex represents a decisive choice by the town council, which in straitened financial circumstances, given a reduced budget from central government, didn’t hesitate to undertake a major project because it firmly believes culture is a vital issue.” So the arts complex completes and extends an offering that over the last decade has benefited from a growing cultural infrastructure. It is intended to complement the Cannes region’s existing venues by its capacity and an original multi-discipline programme covering music, dance, theatre, puppetry, circus, film and documentary screenings, talks and art exhibitions. This April’s programme is a fitting introduction to its eclecticism. In theatre there’s Comme une pierre qui...* retracing the genesis of a masterpiece of popular music, Bob Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone. Singer Barbara Hendricks revisits the roots of jazz in Blues Everywhere I Go**. And flagging up Scène 55’s special interest in puppetry, it is hosting the third Marionette Week (18 to 22 April) and presenting R.A.G.E***, a show telling the story of a real-life imposter who invented a new identity so as to escape retribution. A poetic, magical experience involving cinematic sound effects, a Balkan singer and a trumpet player!
