Artmontecarlo is all about visitor experience, a concept that originated in Geneva. “We favour the format of an intimate show to that of a large-scale fair,” explains event director Thomas Hug, “the idea being to deliberately limit the size so exhibitors and visitors can interact peacefully within a very well-designed layout.” The Artmontecarlo selection committee hand-picks around 40 galleries. This season, joining the big names that took part in the first edition – including Victoria Miro, Pace and Almine Rech – are galleries such as Larry Gagosian’s and Marian Goodman’s. Alongside them, Artmontecarlo runs a non-commercial programme highlighting local initiatives: a show comprising a dozen exhibitions, with an outdoor architecture pavilion and a group show held on board the sublime Big Mak yacht.
