Reiterating its commitment to scientific knowledge and contemporary creativity, Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum is now staging the extraordinary Borderline exhibition. Philippe Pasqua’s taste for the monumental counterpoises his attraction to what is most vulnerable. Brutal and unashamed, his art is disturbing and fascinating in equal measures, throwing the observer into a dilemma: devour with the eye or turn the gaze away. Reflecting today’s issues of protection of biodiversity, the artist offers an exhibition that is similarly sincere and multifarious. Twelve gigantic artworks, seven of them brand new, take over the venue entirely from forecourt to panoramic terrace to cliff face. With the museum’s permanent collection they instigate an unusual exchange that questions the public on its relationship with nature, death and birth.
