For this year's major summer exhibition, the Grimaldi Forum immerses us in the life of the last Chinese imperial dynasty through its opulence, its tastes and its grandeur.
Following on from the 2001 exhibition on China during
the reign of the First Emperor, this year the Grimaldi Forum introduces visitors to court life during the reigns of the emperors and empresses of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). “This is the first time over 3000m² have been devoted to this subject, and such a number of masterpieces,“ enthuses Jean-Paul Desroches, co-curator of the exhibition with Wang Yuegong. The show is designed as a walk through the halls and gardens of the Imperial Palace, with more than 250 exceptional items from the former palace of China’s sovereigns, as well as loans from major European and American collections, on display. The focus is principally on the Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong. Seen as heaven's representative on earth, the emperor was an omnipotent being, simultaneously a religious and military leader and the chief scholar. From astronomers’ hall to Buddhist temple to throne room to conquerors’ hall, the exhibition illustrates both China's immense power under the Qing and the inner workings of the court, that most private aspect of the sovereigns' lives.
