Klein initiated a rupture with the clean, neat, immediately readable photography of Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau; his reality is sometimes disturbing, sometimes violent, always fascinating. Having already had two retrospectives at the Pompidou Centre, the American-French photographer who lives and works in Paris here presents three specific themes. In large black-and-white prints and painted contact prints, he creates a portrait of Cold War Moscow, a past world into which light insinuates itself only briefly, and another of Tokyo in 1964. Nice flaunts its colourful carnival and battles of flowers in a rarely shown series taken at the centenary of our city’s stand-out celebration.
