The late 19th century saw architects and builders erecting New York’s first skyscrapers, tree-like monsters with that same propensity for reaching up to the heavens while seemingly occupying only minimal ground. For more than 40 years Mitch Epstein has been photographing the world through our human achievements and the sometimes perilous connection they have with nature. Although habitually showing the flip-side of the progress coin, in this series he celebrates great “figures”. After denouncing the most sombre aspects of our collective lifestyles, he now moves from lament to praise in his black-and-white depictions of these fine individuals.
