These fearless, fearsome warriors, who upheld until death a strict code of loyalty and honour, are symbolic of Japan’s history. During the long period of peace that reigned from the 17th century, this military class developed into a new nobility, continuing the practice of martial arts but also distinguishing itself in calligraphy, poetry, literature, the tea ceremony and incense rituals.
