Grasse Town presently possesses one of the largest collections of artworks by the 18th-century painter’s son. Many have mostly remained in storage because of their fragility and the lack of space, but now they are enjoying a public airing. Alexandre-Evariste was considered a child prodigy; placed by his father in David’s studio at an early age, he showed his first drawings at the Paris Salon when just 13 years old. An unjustly forgotten official artist, he executed numerous commissions for the Sèvres porcelain factory and the French State during the Empire and the Restoration. He produced designs for prints as well and painted cabinet pictures for private clients, working in a lively, busy troubadour style. As illustrator, painter, decorator and sculptor he left an extensive oeuvre.
