Fernand Léger’s paintings are very well known, his drawings a lot less. These he considered indispensable preparatory aids to painting, indeed instructing his students at the Académie Moderne, opened with Amédée Ozenfant in 1924 in the ebullient Montparnasse of the era, to: “First draw. Something specific, in a line, just one line. Fragments to start with – hands, feet – then figures, then compositions.” A preparatory tool certainly, but Léger also saw drawing as a means of artistic expression in its own right, one he liked to practise regularly, caricaturing his friends, sketching the woman he loved... Discover these in the exhibition Dessinez d’abord, Fernand Léger intime (Draw first, the private Fernand Léger) along with other rarely exhibited works (early caricatures and drawings, war sketchbooks) from the period 1901-1925.
