Jury Prize for Mommy
"Dolan the favourite" titled Libération in its 23 May 2014 edition. Everyone on the Croisette (or almost) agreed that the previous night, a few hours before the Cannes Festival ended, 25-year-old Xavier Dolan's Mommy had won the hearts of festival-goers, who during its screening could still find the strength to express loudly their appreciation of a stand-out scene and tweet their enthusiasm. In the end the Festival jury somewhat tamely awarded only a compensatory Palm to the Canadian prodigy's fifth feature film: the Jury Prize, shared with J-L Godard's Goodbye to Language. Disappointed Xavier Dolan must have been when he went up to accept his Palm, his thank-you speech certainly heartfelt but just slightly regretful at not pulling off the supreme accolade. "As far as was compatible with my dreams, I told myself everything was possible," he declared shortly after the closing night. No matter, the Festival's big event was his Mommy, the most stupefying film presented on the Croisette.
