Lost River by Ryan Gosling
Presented in Un Certain Regard, Ryan Gosling's directorial debut demonstrates the American star's relative independence of mind. Shot in Detroit, a devastated city declared bankrupt in summer 2013, Lost River reminds us of the mesmerising baroque worlds of Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and David Lynch.

Jauja by Lisandro Alonso
Watching this "pampa" Western by Argentinian director Lisandro Alonso, we couldn't help but wonder for what strange reason it didn't make it into the official selection! More than a film, Jauja is an incredible sensory experience in the heart of the grandiose primitive land that was Patagonia in 1882.

Girlhood by Céline Sciamma
These girls on-screen in the Directors' Fortnight section wouldn't have looked out of place in the official competition! With two successes already under her belt – Water Lilies and Tomboy – young French filmmaker Céline Sciamma looks set for a great future. Here she portrays the macho world of France's working-class suburbs with a high degree of intelligence.
