We all know Bernar Venet’s sculpture, especially those of us in Nice, but few are as familiar with the conceptual work he nonetheless developed from the start of his engagement with art in the 1960s. “Disgusted by the hackneyed conventions of French art and fascinated by American formalism and especially Marcel Duchamp,“ Venet established himself from the 1970s as “a leading conceptual artist,” affirm the curators of this exhibition proposed by historian Alexandre Quoi and MAMAC director Hélène Guenin. Into his “boundless” field of activity the French artist incorporated scientific research, abstraction, objectivity and mathematical rationality, creating a very personal oeuvre while at the same time taking part in numerous collective projects at the Judson School along with performances, conferences etc.
