Today's hotel guests expect much more than just a pleasant place to spend the night. When booking accommodation, international tourists are increasingly attentive to the ecological considerations demonstrated by hotel managements. Ten Riviera hotels* (including 2- to 5-star ones) have been awarded Europe's Ecolabel.

Backed up by the CCI, this certification fits with the ShMile2 project that aims to make the Mediterranean Basin's hotel industry conform with sustainable development. In practice, the European Ecolabel, which comprises 29 mandatory criteria and 61 optional ones, is about limiting consumption of energy and water, reducing waste and favouring renewable resources. As an example, to comply with this, the Negresco has changed more than 5000 light bulbs! Guests too can do their bit, notably by sorting waste and rationalising their use of linen. Several other Côte d’Azur hotels are in the process of obtaining certification; in all, 302 French hotels already have the label, 44 being in the PACA region.
