Water-loving Aix boasts 101 fountains, which gush and flow majestically in Place de la Rotonde and punctuate Cours Mirabeau's distinguished row of plane trees. The most spectacular ones include the Fontaine des Neuf-Canons (Nine Canons), the Fontaine Moussue (Mossy Fountain, fed by hot springs) and the Fontaine des Quatre-Dauphins (Four Dolphins) in the Mazarin district, sculpted by Rambot in 1667. This district, elegant and slightly off the beaten track, with squares as pretty as theatre sets lined with mansions that hide their gardens inside, has something of the atmosphere of St-Germain-des-Près in Paris.
