La façade richement ouvragée raconte le XIXe siècle commerçant.On a hill overlooking the sea stands a villa that looks rather like an 18th-century folly. This Napoleon III mini-château was designed in 1865 by architect Henry Condamin for Charles Gounelle, an oil baron from Salon. The building reflects all the opulence of the days when Marseille was a merchants' city: grand three-storey façade, circular dining room, murals depicting the Levant, Africa, the New World, Rome and Venice. The green 2ha hillside park boasts 5 different species of palm along with cistus, pines and oaks set amid rocky outcrops. The villa itself is closed but the park is open to the public.
