This 800m2 immersive exhibition is very much in tune with the museum’s vocation, which is all about life and society around the Mediterranean basin. Several hundred items from major public and private collections – navigation charts, maps, models and mock-ups, photographs, old and rare or precious objects, juxtaposed with contemporary artworks in an attractively designed setting. It reflects the fascination people on the continent have always had with islands, near or far, fertile or desert: places to be conquered, centres of wealth or pleasure, places of exile, prisons, stopping places, refuges. Islands, uniting or separating, seem to be inescapable factors in geopolitics, economics and ethnology.
