One, La Vieille Charité, used to have a religious function and the other, La Friche la Belle de Mai, used to be a factory. The ways of human imagination never run straight!
Par hasard: ‘by chance’. This two-part exhibition is all about serendipity in the making of art. Its themes are Order, Disorder, Imprints, Fragments, Water, Mould, Meetings, Dust, Play and Music. Artists have used all these things to their advantage, combining intelligence with intuition. Leonardo da Vinci encouraged us to look for wonderful landscapes in the stains on a wall; Victor Hugo had fun with the fantastic images he found in ink blots from his pen. The Surrealists created art by playing the parlour game of Consequences, taking turns to add to a text or drawing without seeing the rest. Hungarian painter Simon Hantai earned fame with his ‘folding method’. Drips, dribbles and squirts were the stuff of Georges Mathieu’s performances, while Yves Klein used the prints of women’s bodies on canvas and César crushed old car bodies to create new art. Wandering at random among these works delivers an exhilarating dose of fun.
