To celebrate the second centenary of the birth of the colourful composer, the Marseille opera house is staging Barbe-Bleue. This parody of the life of Henry VIII delighted Offenbach’s contemporaries as a satire on the conventions of their time, but might it not also be relevant to our own? That’s what Laurent Pelly’s brilliant production of the piece suggests.
