Festival de Lacoste
Stars and the silver screen
This annual summer festival is one of the big cultural events in Provence. This year it’s in two parts: the third Festival of Music Films (24-30 July) and then the 22nd Lacoste Festival (1-13 August).

MUSICAL FILMS
Pierre Cardin, originator of the festival, had a close relationship with cinema. It started when he was 20, designing costumes for Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast. He kept it up, meeting film-makers (Max Ophüls, Christian Jacques, Marcel Carné etc.) and actors like Jean Marais, Gérard Philippe, Alain Delon and Gérard Depardieu. And he dressed such stars as Danielle Darrieux, Martine Carole, Marlene Dietrich and Brigitte Bardot. Maybe that’s why he wanted to pay tribute to the 7th Art with open-air screenings in the Quarries at the Marquis de Sade’s castle in Lacoste. The seven films on this year’s programme (one a day), from Mamma Mia and Aladdin to Footloose, reflect his eclectic tastes.
ON STAGE
This festival of music and theatre offers audiences a programme featuring both international artists and young virtuosos at the dawn of promising careers. Singer Emma Kate Nelson gives a concert she has drawn from the great repertoire of Broadway and MGM hits, with English composer and conductor Callum Au. Cali carries us off on a musical journey through “all the happy ages of life”. Great names of the theatre give readings and one-person performances.
