Welcome to Aquae Sextiae, the first town the Romans built in Gaul! They made it an administrative centre on their highway from Italy, but their sumptuous monuments, aristocratic homes and humbler dwellings disappeared as Aix-en-Provence developed over the years. Yet little by little, especially through the archaeological digs of the past 30 years, ever more vestiges of that rich and distant past have been unearthed. The sculptures, mosaics, paintings, architectural fragments and everyday objects in this exhibition offer a delightful glimpse of the lifestyle of Roman Gaul. C.P
