Centre de flamenco Solea

Family, work, passion: flamenco, with its gutsy sensuality, can be all those things.

Casa Flamenca Solea is an institution in Marseille. It's a dance company, a school, a theatre and several hundred members. Maria Pérez started the adventure in 1994; 21 years later, she and it are still going strong. "I was 23 and a student in Aix when I discovered flamenco. But it was already too late for me and I was never able to make a career as a dancer, as I would have liked. So I placed all my bets on teaching. These days my life alternates between the schools where I teach Spanish in the daytime and Solea where I teach flamenco in the evening." The centre offers lessons at four levels, for adults and children, in flamenco and sevillana (the folk dance typical of Seville). Maria also finds time to run workshops in Marseille's difficult housing estates and for the handicapped. "Passing on and sharing what I love is everything to me. They say my dancing reflects the way I am: spontaneous, friendly, clowning at times, with a strong personality. My daughter is like that too. She has settled in Seville, devoting her life to this spirited passion and working with the very best."
