The universal and the singular make perfect bedfellows at Art-o-rama, the premier international art fair in the South of France. On 29 August Art-o-rama partners the Nuit des Galeries.
Twenty art galleries are represented in Art-o-rama at the Friche Belle de Mai this year. Loyal contributors from Paris, London, Brussels, Spain, Italy and Switzerland are joined by new ones from Romania, Munich and Berlin. The paintings, photos, videos, sculptures and installations on show will delight not just discerning art lovers but anyone curious to find out what today's young artists are up to. There are four young talents presented by a Korean gallery, for example. Each year an art expert is invited to select the most promising youngsters among the fresh graduates of the region's art schools, to have their work displayed. This year's guest is curator Véronica Valentini. The gallerists then form a panel to pick the best of the bunch, and the winner is guest artist the following year with a space of their own to do as they please for the duration of the show. Last year's winner, this year's guest, is Saâdane Afif with the latest additions to his ongoing archive of reproductions of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain, gathered from books – the urinal as seen by others. Afif plans to complete the archive in 2017, the 100th anniversary of the celebrated urinal. The other guest artist this year is Vincent Ceraudo, who examines the boundaries between the material, the virtual and the subliminal in art. One of the Art-o-rama partners, Mécènes du Sud, presents works by Anne-Valérie Gasc. It's worth noting that our region – Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur – has more art schools and related institutions than other region in France.
