July 2015

July is festival month

  • Marseille parties!

 juillet festival

In July your best bet is to stay in the city and forget about sleeping, because you’ll be out every night! Festival organisers go all out to entertain us with talent and intelligence in a variety of venues.

 FJ5C: the must-go
Shorthand for the Festival de Jazz des 5 Continents, which from 15 to 24 July stages all types of jazz, veering to blues, soul and world music, in city venues. Once again Palais Longchamp is the festival's hub hosting four nights of music; other venues include Théâtre de la Criée with Raphaël Imbert, the MuCEM, and Théâtre Silvain, a delightful open-air auditorium tucked away in a coomb along the Corniche, where four-times Grammy winner Stanley Clarke is playing. It's a programme of gifted musicians and superstars, among them trumpeter Erik Truffaz and saxophonist Kenny Garrett on the same night (20 July), Charlie Winston of the much-copied rakish headgear (22 July), and Goran Bregovic's electric gypsy vibes setting the park pines a-tremble on 23 July.

Festival de Marseille
The 20th anniversary of this eclectic festival embracing dance, theatre, music, cinema and visual arts. This moveable feast – from Le Silo to Villa Méditerranée and La Criée to the National Ballet's Grand Studio, from 14 June to 17 July – is well worth following for the little gems on its programme.

Festival Mimi
Now in its 30th year, Mimi (Mouvement International pour les Musiques Innovatrices) is the flagship event of Aide aux Musiques Innovatrices, programming emerging artists and encouraging interaction between performers and audiences. Mimi takes place on Frioul island from 1 to 5 July, closing with a creation by Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno.
