Vieille Charité

Saga of modernity

A magnificent exhibition, with 115 artworks by 88 artists organised into three themes reflecting their relationships with modernity: Metropolis, War of the Worlds and Space Odyssey. Ever since the start of the 20th century visionary creatives have been treating us to urban Utopias and imagined futures fed by the thrill of technological progress. Henri Matisse, Kasimir Malevitch, Yves Klein, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Fernand Léger and Bruno Peinado all set out to depict a desirable future. In the rooms of the Vieille Charité and under the vaults of its baroque chapel, paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, installations and films illustrate the challenge while talks, readings and screenings add depth.
