 les artistes au vert

Back to the land! Rural life or a country ramble set the scene for aesthetic experiences.

Zou
When fine art met the hard realities of urban life street art was born, but now some artists are rediscovering the magic of the countryside. For some years now Karine de Barbarin, perhaps inspired by Edouard Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe, has been organising unusual rambles through fields and forest in the area of Venelles near Mont Sainte-Victoire. Her surprise-packed programme, varying according to the season, is called Zou. Tea towels used for the picnic afterwards serve as canvases for her portraits of participants, to be pinned up like laundry, flapping in the sun and wind for all to see.

Musique à la ferme
This cheerful, bucolic chamber music festival has been happening in Lançon-de-Provence each summer for nine years, courtesy of Jérémie Honnoré. It all began with Jérémie's parents' goat farm, where he grew up. Though he moved on – through regional music conservatories and the Alfred Cortot piano school in Paris – Jérémie never forgot the emotions those Rhône valley landscapes inspired in him as a child. About 20 musicians join him for a programme of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and more in three venues, with readings and beginner's lessons to boot. On 18 July in the morning, for example, there's a musical entertainment based on Fontaine's fables, at the Mediathèque du Roulage. In the evening the same day, at La Chèvrerie, you can hear Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals among other pieces. On 19 July the Saint-Savournin wine cellar is the setting for a programme that includes baroque, classic and modern.
