The dazzlingly prolific polytheistic religions of the Mediterranean rim have found a new temple. Where better to display their abundance and their family resemblances than Marseille, a city founded by the Phocaeans? The show brings us 200 sculptures and precious objects dating from the 3rd millennium BCE to the 4th century CE. Mother goddesses, Jupiter, Dionysus, Osiris, centaurs, mummies and amulets: the exhibition design sheds light on the relationships between these various beliefs. Three enthusiastic and knowledgeable curators with complementary specialisms have coordinated contributions from the Fondation Gandur, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva and France’s regional archaeology centres.
