For the new season at the Marseille opera house, Semiramide is back for the first time in 15 years, with Australian soprano Jessica Pratt and Armenian mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan in the lead roles. The libretto, written in 1823 by Gaetano Rossi and inspired by Voltaire’s tragedy Sérimaris, still surprises us. The plot of the tumultuous politico-romantic intrigue is simple enough: Queen Semiramide must find a new lover for the sake of her people. The man she chooses, Arsace, turns out to be her secret son. He is obliged to kill her. For more than three hours Gioachino Rossini’s famous score sweeps up the audience in a whirlwind of intrigue.
