This is the 11th edition of the Salon Méditerranéen de l’Art Contemporain (Mediterranean contemporary art fair), which happens each year in Parc Jourdan, Aix-en-Provence. As you amble along the rows of booths your gaze will fall on paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints – a wealth of variety. Artists invite you into their attractive booths (some set up as studios) to share their singular worlds. Gallery owners spotlight their discoveries and favourite artists. In the wide open spaces beyond the booths, large-scale installations converse with the park’s natural décor. There is a programme of performances, encounters and talks. Artworks, collectors, exhibitors and artists from France and elsewhere give the show vitality and variety. But the good-humoured atmosphere still leaves room for international ambitions, boosted by the artistic reputation of Aix-en-Provence (think Cézanne and the Aix opera festival). This art show has found its personality and earned its legitimacy. This year the fair opens with Poppy Salinger, chair of the Pierre and Poppy Salinger Foundation in Thor, Vaucluse, in attendance.
