You must have seen them around, those odd-looking mountain bikes with wheels no bigger than 50cm across. Well, they are the stars of the Watsa Festival, which combines an international pro and amateur BMX contest with an electro music festival. A festival bringing together the world’s top riders, international BMX stars, fans of extreme sports and lovers of electro. As well as presenting a spectacular sport involving physical and technical prowess, the festival includes a DJ talent launchpad for musical wonderkids from the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region, recruited through social and student networks. On the communication side, the festival village provides a platform for businesses and associations. Among other activities there are initiation sessions for anyone who wants to have a go at bicycle motocross; this is run by the UCPA open-air sports union branch from the Palais Omnisports Marseille Grand-Est. The young organisers want Watsa to become “the most important international BMX competition in France.” Admission is free, all are welcome, and the festival has adopted an innovative idea for having fun without disturbing the neighbourhood: a “silent party“ (or headphone disco) on the evening of Saturday 24 May, organised by Silent Nativ.
