Baroque plastic

Baroque Plastic is a cross-cultural sharing experience created by Via Créa: a residence for Brazilian and Mediterranean artists on the island of Itaparica.

An unusual gamble! Isabelle Viatte, founder of the Via Créa communication and design agency, explains: “My job is to inspire a new collaboration between creative proposals and market logic. By becoming involved in artistic ventures such as exhibitions, performances and publishing, a luxury label can show a different brand image and convey a more refined message.“ Baroque Plastic was born in 2013 on Itaparica (off the coast of Salvador de Bahia), a lively cultural melting pot that provides a nourishing setting for this international “media lab”. For two weeks, the artists occupy an old chapel on the beach, between countryside, jungle, villages and shoreline. Totally free of formal restrictions, the theme of Baroque Plastic takes shape through cross-fertilisation between the 10 European and 20 Bahian visual artists, designers, musicians, fashion designers, dancers and gastronomists. Result: a fresh and lively contemporary art collection, on show in France and Brazil in 2014, made from a ton of waste plastic recovered from the beach. Among the artists is Porto Alegre born Luis Valasco. His talent first emerged when the Rio Carnival commissioned him to make masks for the prestigious Samba Schools; then came costumes, accessories and adornments for the stage, always inspired by nature. These veritable sculptures will be on show again at the end of the year for a solo show in Bahia.
