It’s a first for the South of France: the Théâtre des Salins presents Calacas* at La Halle in Martigues. Hold on tight, this show is a galloping good time!
Bartabas’ legendary equestrian theatre troupe Zingaro needs no introduction. The dancing horses are beyond our wildest dreams and every show a moment of pure amazement. Bartabas’ latest creation, Calacas, born in Mexico City, takes over the heavens, makes light of the Grim Reaper and offers a huge, colourful, fast and furious panorama. The living dead whirl around in a joyful danse macabre; the 29 dazzling horses leave you breathless. The entire troupe is there, treating the audience to a supercharged carnival with Mexican brass bands, organs and chinchinero drums (a chinchinero being a street performer with a bass drum on his back). Zingaro once again takes us out of ourselves to another world. Even more extravagant is the revolutionary circular track that seems to float around the audience, giving the impression that the horses are galloping above their heads. Killingly beautiful.
