Jean Genet, committed writer and poet, died 30 years ago this year. The exhibition at MuCEM shows us the importance of the Mediterranean region in his life and work and the continuing relevance of the themes he addressed at a time of colonial wars and social discrimination: Algeria, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Black Panthers in the Unites States. The exhibition takes as its framework three of Genet’s works and their contexts: Le journal d’un voleur (The Thief’s Journal), set in Spain; Les Paravents (The Screens), set in North Africa, and Un captif amoureux (Prisoner of Love), set in Palestine. Great photographs, rare archive items and a portrait by his friend Alberto Giacometti. Giacometti’s Man Walking is here too, as if to represent Genet himself, a libertarian nomad throughout his life.
