Claire hails from Aix, Cristiano from Rio. Singer, composer: musicians. With a hundred instrumentals and as many songs, they bring Brazilian choro to romantic life with a few added African beats.
Music and love are inextricably intertwined in the story of this duo. “What I love about the Brazil I know (because there are many Brazils), and that I find in condensed form in Cristiano, is a kind of power generated by love of life. Brazilian music always sings that power. When there’s nothing to eat and the saucepans are empty, no problem, beat out a rhythm on them with a couple of spoons and start dancing!“ Claire conveys the feeling of that bond Brazilians have with the essential things of life and the land: sharing, even when they have almost nothing; having fun and enjoying being together. This extreme generosity and kindness can be heard in choro and even more in a roda, where the musicians become choroes (slaves) of the music, taking turns to play solos, surrounded by a circle of children and adults immersed in the music. Claire has invested composer Darius Milhaud with a kind of symbolic fatherhood. Like him, she hails from Aix and, like him, she studied at the Aix conservatory, just a century later. Both brought choro back from Brazil. Milhaud translated it into his own musical language as one of the materials he composed with. Claire plays it, along with Cristiano, and the duo sets Provence ablaze.
