Salon Vivre Côté Sud 2014

  • The irresistible lightness of voile

A voile curtain billows from a window, a brightly coloured awning flaps in the wind and there are cushions of every hue: the theme of the 16th Vivre Côté Sud fair is Toiles et Voiles (canvas and voile).

The fair’s curator Florence Colonna declares the game open. “A game of hide and seek between canvas and voile, hot sun and cool breeze, indoors and out, walls of toile and fluid doors, laughter overheard beside a washing place and siesta under canvas. That’s the spirit and essence of Mediterranean life: a taste for quality time and real lifestyle. Everything good and beautiful is on display, with ancient craft skills, innovative creations and meetings of like minds. Last year we had over 20,000 visitors.“ Imagine a summer evening, with 18 lanterns made from designer fabrics lining the path. An installation by Fabienne Spahn is called Jour de lessive (washing day): wash tank, wooden planks, piles of linen, big blocks of soap, scrubbing brushes. Linen is drying on a long line above the tank, multicoloured plastic basins float on the water, with foutas, towels and pillow cases. Fabric editors Etamine, Bisson Brunel, Dedar, Akin & Suri, Zéphyr & Co meet business contacts at the Espace Côté Sud Projets and run the Côté Décors area. On the Côté Saveurs side there are gourmet treats galore and cookery lessons too. As well as long chats about trends in the contemporary South of France.
