 CHANSON JULY 2016

To celebrate summer and its many festivals we put the spotlight on four Provençal performers. Two lads and two lasses, each with a very individual style but great stage presence.

Martine and Anna both have lovely voices. Martine has been singing romantic melodies and love songs since she was tiny; Anna is more into jazz and blues. Martine Malory is already well known for her first hit ”Baby Music” (Phonogram Barclay label) and her albums Tamara and Une certaine image du bonheur (2014). Her next album, C’est la vie qui court, is due out on the StarMédia label at the end of this year. Anna Farrow, self-taught and Anglo-French by culture, has one album out so far, inspired by the atmosphere of the jazz clubs she regularly frequents around the world. It’s called Days and Moods, was recorded in 2015 at ONDE Music/Ropeadope and came out at the start of this year. On 15 September you can hear Anna sing at Magic Mirrors in Istres.

It’s well-known that lads like to act up. Like Xavier Adrien Laurent, familiar as a Marseille comedian but also a script writer, director, artistic director and cultural event designer. In fact he does whatever it takes to keep one foot onstage. Those who missed his one-man show Xavon de Marseille at the Théâtre Toursky can catch up with him on 27 August at the Nuits du Château festival in Montfort-sur-Argens. Another great comedian, one of the select band of picturesque Provençal comics, is Thierry Wilson alias Zize. Zize, an outrageous caricature of a feisty Marseille gal, was invented by Thierry Wilson around 2005 and is now very popular. In Thierry’s new show La Famille Mamma Mia, incident follows hilarious incident as Zize marries off her eldest son, the handsome Paulo. To see what happens, head to Avignon where the show is playing on the fringe of the 2016 Avignon Festival until 30 July.
