The museum of Mediterranean archaeology at the Vieille Charité (a place worth visiting in its own right), has mounted an exhibition on a grand scale: «Banquets from Marseille to Rome: pleasures and power games». The idea for this epic swords-and-sandals exhibition doubtless came from the discovery in Rome of the remains of the revolving banqueting hall designed by Nero and the discovery of the remains of three different banqueting halls in Marseille. The exhibits and the exhibition design are positively intoxicating, as befits the subject. Wine, women, film and music bring the banquet to life, a feast for our senses of taste, sight and hearing. A joy.
