The invitation is from Jan Goossens, director of the Festival de Marseille. Though he started out in philosophy and social science, he now works to bring people together, in all their diversity, through the performing arts.
When he was artistic director at the Royal Theatre in Brussels his work pleased French- and Flemish-speaking Belgians alike. His creed is to «give meaning to the richness of our differences». So fusion and crossovers of all kinds are on the programme for this 22nd edition of the Festival de Marseille: more venues, more dance genres, more partners and co-productions. And while dance still predominates, there are also films, plays, workshops and symposiums. With dancers from Marseille, the Netherlands, South Africa, Germany, Mali, Chile, Algeria, Brazil, Morocco and Provence enlivening our days and nights in venues all around town. To crown it all, this year the Festival d’Avignon and the Festival de Marseille have partnered up for an ‘African Focus’. Marseille and Provence, difference and togetherness: which is what makes for their appeal. Jan Goossens sums it all up: «Marseille, Africa and Dance, multiplied by Generosity, Solidarity and Elegance». Let’s dance!
