mercure

Statuette Mercure, début IIIe siècle, découverte à Berthouville, France.

One day in 1830, a farmer ploughing his fields in Berthouville unearthed a treasure hoard: 128 silver objects including statuettes, bowls and jugs, dedicated to the Gallo-Roman god Mercury Canetonensis. These objects would have served both ornamental and religious purposes. The silverwork is of exceptionally high quality, showing the degree of skill the craftsmen of those days could achieve and also the kinds of things the Roman elite liked to have around them. Also in the exhibition are a number of items from the Cabinet du Roi collection; these are made of gold, the most precious of metal of all. And to put the Berthouville hoard in context, the museum is displaying items from its permanent collection that reflect the luxury life of the Arles elite in Roman times.
