L’Inondation à Port Marly, 1872, huile sur toile National Gallery of Art, Washington, Collection de M. et Mme Paul Mellon

Alfred Sisley, both French and English by education and habit, quit the business world to devote himself to painting. In London he had loved Turner’s work; back in Paris he became a friend of Renoir, Monet and Bazille. He used to set up his easel in the Fontainebleau countryside, painting from nature. His fortune lost, living from hand to mouth, devoted to his art, he tirelessly painted the Seine and its banks in the Impressionist style he has come to epitomise.
