The good vibes of this festival are catching! This year it’s spreading beyond its usual stamping ground to more venues throughout the department and with more dates on the programme.
The festival has changed a lot in 20 years. While still faithful to the spirit of founders Roger Luccioni and Bernard Souroque, bringing the very best of the jazz world to Marseille, this year it’s spreading its wings with 14 shows in other towns, related festivals like the Les Musicales de la Font de Mai in Aubagne, and shows scheduled all the way to December.
The heart of the matter
The 2018 edition of Jazz des 5 Continents opens on 18 July with a gigantic free show involving 100 artistes including Accoules Sax and Thomas de Pourquery, and venues including MuCEM and Palais Longchamp, where an amazing programme is lined up through to 27 July. The Palais Longchamp park has hosted the cream of the jazz world over the years and fans flock ever more numerous to drink in the vibes.
Tailor-made
These days Erik Truffaz is producing astonishing music inspired by Pérotin (creator of 13th-century polyphony)
and Gregorian chant, with an added touch of jazz improvisation. In residence at the Fondation Camargo,
he has written pieces for voice and trumpet which he is performing with the Ensemble Emelthée in five abbeys and churches in the greater Marseille area, on 12-16 July.
