The Musée d’Art Contemporain in Marseille has tuned into this year’s municipal culture fest entitled Quel Amour !
to mount an exhibition under (almost) the same title. A whole culture of love, on show until 2 September.
The exhibition Quel Amour ! ? has been put together by artist Eric Corne, curator of many an international exhibition. The title hovers undecided between exclamations and questions, and between male and female, with the indefinable question of human feelings at its core. What is love? How do you recognise it? What forms can it take? Between passion, modesty, fantasies, desire and whatever you fancy, each must find their own answer, their deepest conviction. The exhibition boasts 150 creations by 68 artists of all ages and nationalities, including Adolphe Monticelli, Francis Bacon, Germaine Richier, Louise Bourgeois, Helena Almeida, Paula Rego, Antoine d’Agata, Pilar Albarracin and Kara Walker. Some have produced work especially for the show; others have worked together in four-hand harmony (Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Gilbert & George, Gérard and Elisabeth Garouste). Also addressed is love of the most enigmatic type: self-love, and the fascination every human being has for the reflection of their own face. Are you there, Narcissus? And finally, to explore this universal language with even greater freedom, the exhibition offers two separate entrances, each with an emblematic artwork, one by Kiki Smith, the other by Joana Vasconcelos. Depending which one you choose, your path through the exhibition will be different.
