Jérôme Pantalacci brings artists and gallerists together at La Friche for a late summer art fair.
In the Cartonnerie space at La Friche, some 20 galleries from France, Europe and as far away as Guatemala offer a precious glimpse of their artists’ work to collectors and the public. The world is changing, and so is art! This year critic and trendspotter Frédéric Bonnet is curating one of the exhibitions. The show in the Panorama tower ponders on the war years when Marseille sheltered European exiles fleeing Nazism – a crucial period that has to a large extent defined Marseille’s cultural identity. The show’s title, Ce que raconte la solitude (What solitude tells), was chosen by Syrian poet Golan Hadji. There’s also the annual Show Room spotlighting four artists who live or have lived in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region. One of the four is selected to be the next year’s guest artist – as was the case for this year’s guest, Peruvian artist Sergio Verastegui, who studied at Villa Arson in Nice.
An archaeological eye
Sergio Verastegui, nourished by images of his Andean childhood, still has the freshness of a nomadic soul. Was it in Brazil, where he has also lived, that he discovered a need to return to the wild state in the Amazon forest? That’s the experience he recounts in this illustrated narrative midway between travelogue and exhibition catalogue.
Who said psychedelic?
Until 3 August the Sextant et Plus association invites us up to the big terrace at La Friche, to immerse ourselves in memories. This monumental mise en scène of our beliefs and rebellions is radical and liberating! Rock, Situationism, the Cultural Revolution – so many ghosts evoked in a few images and forms that haunt us from the far end of the attic of memory.
