As always, the programme for the Festival de Jazz des 5 Continents promises a wealth of brilliant musicianship and emotion for vibrant nights beneath the starry sky.
There’s no letup in the pace of Marseille cultural events. After a fabulous 2013 edition that did honour to Marseille-Provence as European Capital of Culture, this year’s FJ5C festival, the 15th, should «be a watershed in the history of this great musical event,» say the organisers. It offers a rich profusion of acts, with quite a few newcomers. So get set for a moment of real pleasure on 17-26 July with a festival that’s in the prime of life and puts some serious thinking into its programming.
Stars, landmarks and surprises
Stars aplenty! The ground will be throbbing to the sounds of Ahmad Jamal, Sergio Mendes, Herbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter, Jeff Beck and more. There’s fusion, with Dhafer Youssef and Nils Petter Molvaer, Ibrahim Maalouf and guests, and the new generation with Trombone Shorty, Electro Deluxe, Gregory Porter and many more. Marseille city centre picks up on the festival mood with exhibitions, film shows, encounters and more music. Late in the evening, after those hours sitting cross-legged on the cool grass of the gardens, you can head for a comfy armchair in the lounge of the Hôtel Radisson Vieux-Port, where the Jazz Club will welcome you for after-show drinks. No-one gets left out: the festival is running a reception area for those with impaired mobility and has installed magnetic loop systems at the concert site and on the J4 esplanade for those with hearing impairment. They’ve had a thought for the impecunious too, with the Flux de Marseille pass that gives entry to six festivals for just €45 and student tickets available through Marseille Fête ses Etudiants.
