Back to the sea! The Fiesta des Suds, Marseille’s annual melting-pot celebration of music from France and all points South, is taking place on the J4 quayside again this year.
Once again Marseille plays host to a joyous mix of rhythms and energies from France and across the globe, with music of many kinds from pop, jazz and rap to today’s sounds from Mali, Angola and beyond. The Fiesta has come back to the quayside beside the Mucem museum for this year’s edition, which is more “Southern” than ever, and has even managed to achieve gender parity! On Thursday 11 October, Ibeyi sets the hybrid tone: these two sisters, born in Paris to a Cuban father and Venezuelan mother, create a mellow blend of hip-hop and Yoruba tradition. On the 12th you can hear the popular Malian singer Oumou Sangaré, a kind of ambassador of her native Wassoulou region and a vocal advocate of women’s rights. Her singing is a continuous flow of stories, comment, social criticism, humour and incantation. Also on the bill are singer-songwriter and actress Camille, winner of numerous Victoire de la Musique awards; Jeanne Added with her French electro repertoire; pop rock with the group Hyphen Hyphen from Nice; and, from around Marseille itself, Moussu T e lei Jovents, Massalia Sound System and La Banda du Dock. The Docks des Suds, where the Fiesta ran for many years, is the venue for the kids’ version, La Fiesta des Minots, on Wednesday 17 October, and for the post-fiesta DJ night on the Saturday, when DJ Vadim Feat & Big Red and Grand Master DJ Rebel unleash the decibels.
