As the sun sets the night birds take over and Monaco starts to buzz with the vibes of lounge bars, hip clubs and legendary hangouts.
Port Hercule for aperitifs
Why not start off on the terrace of the Quai des Artistes, a traditional Paris-style brasserie? From 6pm the Before is an attractive proposition after beach or work, for a glass of wine and some tapas, a cool, laidback ambience and hip live music. If you fancy a cold beer and some barbagiuans (deep-fried chard parcels), head to the Brasserie de Monaco where you can wind down, nibble, chat and bop to the latest hits. The Jack – flashy padded banquettes, inventive cocktail list, world-food menu – throws a traditional French bal on Mondays then on Wednesdays hosts the delightful Sisters G. The popular new kid on the block, straight from Saint-Tropez, is Joseph, featuring seafood in its restaurant and a marine-décor lounge bar/club; on Thursdays and Fridays DJ Saad, who's made two singles with Mr Luke, sends the temperature rising so you end the evening dancing. Cocktail lovers go on to party at the Black Legend with its vodka-based creations, while La Rascasse is as much as ever the hangout for young hipsters, post-beach to 4.45am.
Unmissable hotel bars
With Fontvieille harbour as backdrop, the Modjo restaurant/tapas bar – speciality: gyoza (Japanese fried dumplings) – has John G on the decks delivering hit chill and deep sounds from Friday on, while in the heart of the Principality the hotel bars specialise in ultra-chic evenings. The Hermitage's Crystal Bar with its fabulous view of Monaco's Rock goes all-over pop-rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a pianist and vocalist, best enjoyed with friends, a glass of excellent wine and a cigar. In the Hôtel de Paris's Bar Américain you toy with salmon, foie gras and lobster canapés while listening to Niel’s Trio, amidst time-worn leather and beautiful wood. Beside the Monte-Carlo Bay's lagoon, the high-design pool-side Blue Gin offers sheesha smoking and John Lorenz on music. In summer the Métropole's Odyssey is open to non-residents, so let yourself be whisked off into its mythical world created by Lagerfeld, with live and DJ music; just sip cocktails beside the pool or savour the food concocted by Joël Rebuchon and Christophe Cussac. And don't miss the hip, elegant Bar de l’Intempo at the Méridien Beach Plaza, open 24hr a day and every Thursday hosting Arty Hour: drinks, live artist, DJ and tapas.
Party 'til dawn in Larvotto
Every Tuesday from 6.30pm the Mozza trattoria puts on an aperitif show with Italian cocktails, all-you-can-eat buffet and DJ, in the most sociable atmosphere. The Note Bleue lounge blends simplicity and refinement, with concerts and a jazz festival, a beach, and a restaurant serving gorgeous food. Sitting atop the Grimaldi Forum, Zelo’s tempts you with lovely fresh produce on its à la carte menu and the chance to sample skilfully mixed cocktails while taking in a grandiose panorama; at weekends this glamorous place's festive-chic aperitifs segue into full blown partying until 4.30am. Other Larvotto venues where celebs and night birds hang out include the classy Sass Café restaurant/music bar that after dinner turns into a night club, and the unmissable Twiga where you can chill out on the pontoon taking in the sunset with cocktails, sheesha pipe and DJ, before heading into the club at midnight. Opening onto a Japanese lagoon complete with waterfalls, Jimmy’z has been drawing show-biz stars and jet-setters for more than 40 years; again this month you'll find the biggest names in EDM on this mythic club's decks, including Lost Frequencies (5 August), Robin Schulz (14th) and Martin Solveig (21st).
