Real foodies no longer waste time traipsing round acres of supermarket shelves. They find it a lot more fun, and far more ethical, to shop around for the best.
Every foodie delight has its shrine, so let’s look around some stores specialising in particular exclusive product ranges. First there were the much-appreciated caves à vin; more recently, tearooms-cum-tea-shops like Kusmi Tea have been springing up all over, and now, just as we were wondering “what else?”, Nespresso has opened up a new foodie niche. The idea is catching on. BiBoViNo, with some 15 outlets in France and abroad, is the first brand to specialise exclusively in the sale of high-quality wines in Bag In Box™ packaging.
The artisan is king
Working on a smaller scale are the many artisan food shops who take the environment seriously and focus on local organic produce and producers. Just the way we like it, especially when loving care is taken over the decoration of the shop. One example in Marseille is the Bar à Pain, which Emmanuel Arnoux opened last year. It’s an organic bakery where everything is made in the old way and sold by weight. Then there’s the Maison Saint-Honoré in Endoume, another must for its quality bread-making. And confectioner L’Espérantine in Marseille, where Francesco Martorana picks top-quality ingredients to achieve a harmony between nutritional and health value and terrific taste.
On the cheese side, Fromagerie Kalou has over 80 cheeses, all of them farmhouse or artisan made and presented under glass domes, like jewels, in tall display units like bookcases. In the same spirit, the Comptoir O Huiles revives the history of Marseille olive oil and offers tastings of the region’s best oils. And, lastly, top marks for Bar à Vrac where all the locally-sourced produce is sold in bulk – zero throw-away packaging – in a perfectly lovely shop-cum-café in the Réformés district.
