Marseille is the home town of pastis but it also has wine in its DNA! More than 2600 years ago, the Phocaeans settled in Marseille and planted Provence’s first vines. So it seemed natural to have an event involving artists, winegrowers and cooks to celebrate the rich heritage that resulted. The first Hors les Vignes festival takes place in late April, celebrating wine, cuisine and art. The brains behind this happy day are Gourméditerranée, a club formed by local chefs, and Intervins, an organisation of wine growers and brokers. “Visitors can let go and enjoy the combinations of artistic, gustatory and festive pleasures,” says Anne Rouch, communications manager at Intervins. Some 3000 people are expected, drawn by the impressive programme: nine trios, each consisting of a chef, an artist and a winegrower, tempt us with their harmonious combinations of luscious food, wine and artworks. The operation is promoting PGI wines (Protected Geographical Indication) produced in south-eastern France and sure to bring good cheer. As Anne Rouch points out, “The Marseille region has an excellent track record in wines, and this event shows that it is a first-rate destination for creativity, good food and good local wine.”
