This wonderful Italian-style theatre is a welcoming place that appeals the moment you see it. Its story is part and parcel of the town’s heritage. All through the 20th century it was the place to go for a play or a film – until 1977, when it closed down. But ten years later it rose like a phoenix from its ashes, more modern, comfortable and convenient. It’s now an ideal amenity that attracts all kinds of audience and hosts all the key moments of Aubagne’s cultural life. It boasts a rich programme with some fifty shows a year ranging from the popular to the highbrow: a diverse choice of high quality entertainment, with everything from jazz and stand-up comedy to classical music, dance, vocal acts, children’s shows and of course drama. Aubagne audiences lap up this ambitious offering, which gives pride of place to local and Provençal performers and theatre groups. The Comoedia is the municipal theatre; there are also two theatres in the non-profit sector: L’Escale, which is into current music trends, and La Distillerie, where creative drama groups from all over the region put on contemporary plays.
